i read a little from "flowers for algernon" to kick my reading off this morning.
i read a couple facebook updates.
i scanned news headlines and read a couple articles.
the most interesting article led me to read about Roger Wolcott Sperry, who won a Nobel prize in 1981 for his split-brain research. his work did not prove, but certainly demonstrated, that the left and right hemispheres of our brains may not just act independently from each other, but each may also contain consciousness. consciousness separate from our own consciousness. that would give each human a minimum of 3 consciousness, without counting subconscious, unconscious, preconscious, and the like.
i then read some of my book and made a few edits. looking for clarification on a term, i then found myself reading a bunch about BDSM - bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, sadism, masochism
i have enjoyed more than a few thrills from this lifestyle, but i've rarely found myself reading anything having to do with it. from today, i saw that:
numerous studies have shown NO correlation between bdsm porn and sex crimes
participants in the spectrum of bdsm have been classified as diseased, according to our psychology gods, until the rollback on the bdsm/disease idea, beginning in the mid 1990's.
many countries, "civilized" countries, like England, make it a crime for anybody to inflict bodily harm, even if it is mutual and consensual
it seems about 20% of people worldwide, irregardless of sexual orientation, have participated in some type of bdsm play, from handcuffs and spanking to activities further down the pain/pleasure spectrum
still, who knows about these percentages, because much of this play and lifestyle seems hidden, probably somewhat related to the stigma of being labeled as diseased, or despicable, or going to jail.
it may be reasons like that which have me racking my brain to come up with any public figure, outside of the Marquis de Sade, that has openly proclaimed they practice this lifestyle.
i foresee a number of people coming out of the dungeon closet in this era...and then probably a number of others walking down the faux stone steps to willingly embrace a chain around their wrists and ankles

oh, if only Oprah did a show on this.
ReplyDeletewell, i took 1 further step to make oprah aware - i posted this to google buzz. i guess that means i'm a buzzer and was buzzy.
ReplyDeletesomething tells me oprah got down 'n dirty with leather and lace and flogging with that longtime lover/friend of hers. now she just needs to open up about that so others might feel like they have permission to follow their desires, because, you know, oprah gave it the ok
