harking back in my mind, i recall that freud based a number of his theories off greek and shakespearian tragedies. those, of course, we art. entertainment! look at freud's scientific study regarding hamlet or juliet or oedipus, based around a few very unwell participants, and then you'll have some truth.
ahh - psychology's daddy. or mommy, technically, but maybe males in general are not okay with being referred to as the creator/mother of something, thus the misnomer. well, this daddy/mommy has gone in and out of favor. same for some of his sons and daughters and grandchildren. the theories de jour go in and out of textbooks and our lingo like this 21 second clip - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV_hDyfmEw4
i wonder if freud ever read the shakespearian comedies. i wonder if he burned them, like another german that caused a shit-ton of irrevocable damage to humankind. if our theories on humans were based off comedies, rather than the long suffering, death riddled tragedies, it would be easier to say, "people are generally okay. especially when they find quality things to laugh about. and make merry. my prescription - laugh more!" not good for repeat business. especially when about the only drug pharmacies could sell that'll help people laugh more is pot. not the cocaine freud himself was rumored to be quite fond of.
at least jung had the decency to announce to the world he was a whack job. he based his theories on himself. and his rampant drug use; mescaline, i believe. and his dreams. and astrology and astronomy. and hinduism and some buddhism.
then there's perhaps the biggest buddhist influence on psychology - maslow's hierachy of needs. the goal being, how to obtain self-actualization, which could be another way to say nirvana.
for me, psychology's greatest attribute was that it made available its origins, so i was able to go to the source material once i was all but through with this witchdoctory science. and like jung, i've found my greatest source inside myself.
i find it funny that my last two writings here stemmed from the varied, and strong, responses i've received from merely saying, "i kinda like a girl." it's funny enough that i'm okay with all that it contains
